Digipak making research

What is a digipak?
A digipak is an extended CD package; it obviously holds the actual CD and any other extra information needed to make up a professional promotional pack. It can be opened up like a book which is more interesting than having a normal CD case with one CD inside, Digipak’s can contain more than one CD at a time signifying its high limitations of promotional uses. The main CD is normally placed in the middle to show its importance over the other CD's. It usually has some sort of image or design on it to relate to the album itself. The main purpose for the digipak is to promote the product inside its casing, seeing as there is extra information inside it this makes it more expensive in comparison to a normal CD case, however it makes more money and time to make and sell off, the artists and companies sell them for more money so they are not losing out.

Research Online
When looking for Digipak's online we came across this template on Google search. We wanted our digipak to be able to have six panels to be able to display the right amount of pictures to promote our music video artists. This gives us five panels to promote whatever we thought was necessary within the selective boxes limits. As this digipak has already got a disk holder this gives us an incline of where we can post our images and have certain guidelines into making it look more professional and realistic. We have chosen a template that has an easy looking structure which will be more profound when having to accurately design our digipak. I have also found out that with the extra information they give away it means that they can promote their digipak's to wider audiences making themselves more money by promoting to different ethnicitys.

We are going to use a variety of abstract images that we have taken throughout the making of our music video; this gives the digipak a realistic feel to it. Making our digipak be more bold and colourful will give us an advantage into attracting our house music loving audience and also fits in with the theme of house music being bright, colourful and abstract in a way.

This is an image taken from Google of a music video digipak. We are hoping to desgin something like this which is simple and colourful yet still interesting to look at. They have conveyed their pictures to intreege their chosen audience into what their album is about by having each of their photos on the digipak to show who they are but also having an image in the middle of a zebra pattern which could semantically suggest they are wild, animals or even suggest they believe in black and white together like the patterns of the zebra skin.

Story board

Props and Costumes

In our music video, Save the World, we are hoping to use a variety of different props and costumes to fit the genre of house music. Starting with our opening scene being based in a bath we are using this as one of our starting props. There will be two baths as it shows that the two characters are set in different places but are starting their day the same way. The costumes for this scene is meant to look as if we are in the bath but we would obviously have to wear bikini's or swimming trunks as it would be too explicit if not. The next scene is of Kieran in his so called 'drug den'. We will have small bags of flour to portray the look of cocaine and have a spoon with melted sugar and water to look as if he has been doing heroine, we will wrap a belt around his arm to look more realistic. Kieran will be dressed in dark clothing which connotates his depressed mood. The girl will start her day normally, going to work; she will be dressed in bright clothing and act all happy in her office job. The props used in this scene will be the schools equipment of a desk, phone and a computer as we will be filming school's reception as if she was working as a receptionist. When Kieran has passed out from his drugs we are acting as if the day has gone by and it is now night time, by this time the girl is heading out to go to a club, We will have to find a specific door which will allow us access to opening without showing off what is inside the room itself. This will allow us to add in our festival scene as if she is actually there. Soon after we will reverse all of the scenes to go back to the start of them coming out of the bath, this will make the audience think that it is a new day. Kieran gets out of the bath and it jump cuts to him sitting at the train station; once again he is dressed in dark clothing to display his depressed mood towards life. He is sitting on the bench waiting for a train, when the train comes it will leave and he will not be there anymore, we will then cut to him sitting on the train. Meanwhile the girl is already at Southend Pier where Kieran is heading towards to commit suicide. We will have the girl eating candy floss or eating chips as another prop. Once again she will be dressed in bright colours in comparison to Kieran’s dull coloured clothing. We will use the railings of the Pier as another prop for when he is contemplating on jumping off.

SAE institute day out

As we are studying media at A-level we thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the SAE institute in London which specialises in Media studies, Animation and Gaming. Visiting this uni was a benefit for our media project as we got to find out about what editing software was best to use, look at the top equipment which is used by the film industry and how certain shots are made. We had questions on how to make certain shots we wanted to use in our music video, which we wasn't too sure on how to make/edit so by going here we got to speak to people who know a lot more about media than we do.
We got to have a look at a green screen, and a white screen which is usually used in scenes which cannot to shot in everyday life as you can warp to scenes together to look like one. However we cannot get our hands on one of these to actually film our music video which would have been a huge benefit as it would have created professional looking footage. We learnt about lighting, how to use a steady cam and what are thge 'tricks of the trade'
By having this day out it allowed us to elaborate our ideas and decided to be more creative with our shots & footage as we have a wider knowledge of the subject and how to create different effects.
In these pictures you can see Emma using a steady cam, we learnt how to mantle the steady cam and walk in a straight like to get a steady shot, also there was specific lighting such as the use of a small umbrella over the main light allowed the light to spread around the room and decrease shadows from ruining a shot. The green&white screen were made without corners which was found interesting as it means that you can film someone walking along with a limitation of space as there is no corner. Also one of the pictures you can see if from the view of the steady cam with Emma in and some writing at the bottom.

Results to our Questionnaire

Results to Our Questionnaire Answers

idea number two

The title of the song is called 'save the world' so we thought we could go with an approach of two main characters, each going through their day-day routine. E.g. close up shot of their faces coming out of the bath water. This could be done through a split screen so the audience understands that their in two seperate locations. One of the characters will have a depressing era to them such as sitting in dark rooms, not going out much whereas the other will be 'full of life' partying, socialising. The characters will both end up at the same location (southend pier) where the depressed character will contimplate committing suicide over the edge, and the ending will be the other character being there in time to save them.

We will show a significant different between the two characters through the use of colours, speed of editing and the costumes in which they will be wearing. An idea we had was that the depressive characters day would be filmed in black and white to show that there is no colour/happiness in his life, whereas the other characters will be vibrant bright colours to represent happiness/life.

One of the scenes we was thinking of doing for the depressive character was sitting them in a dark room (hoping to use an abandoned house) where they are sitting in the corner showing how their on drugs/have been taking drugs (needles and pills on the floor, smoking and shown use of drugs)

It would then cut to the other character being at work, getting on with their day, going out with friends etc.

Another shot we want to do is a close up of the depressed characters eyes looking all dark and ugly and then a really quick cut to the other characters eyes looking all colourful and pretty, we are also hoping to use a fish eye lense for the depressed characters life to show that they are 'living in a bubble/their own world'

Brief

Our task is to create a music video of our chosen song choice, we have to involve a range of different camera angles; such as low angle, high angle, close ups, wide shots, establishing shots etc., show a range of different editing techniques; such as the use of different colour splashes, slow motion, speed up and split screens. This will all happen to fit in with our chosen music backing track. We have to go out doing independent learning to find our own mise en scene locations that we think will fit well with the song and also how we can edit it to make it look more effective. This could mean we can use different effects; we will download IMajiCam which has a range of effects we can add to our filming to make it more realistic as a music video.

Idea number one

The start of the music video will involve kieran under water in the bath. He will then arise from the tub, this scene will be dark to fit in with the next scene of the flash back in black and white of Kieran and his girlfriend being all happy to show why he is in a depressing way.

The plot is that Kieran's girlfriend dies of drugs (pills from a party) and the story is about how Kieran is trying to cope with the loss of her. There will be alot of flash backs of him and his girlfriend when she was alive and well portraying their happy relationship together showing us why it is so hard for Kieran to get over her.
The next scene will be of Kieran alone while everyone else around him is happy and enjoying themselves in present time. Kieran then walks past walls in our location being Brick Lane, everything is changing but he still stays the same.

We will film on Barge and some in Southend and have split screens of Kieran being depressed next to the water whilst his friends are partying in clubs, some of this footage will be taken from festivals we have been to, for example; V festival, everyone is jumping around to the music in colourful clothing where as Kieran will be dressed in all black to signify his mood.
There will be a one shot close up of his face in a dark setting soon after, singing the main lyric
"who's going to save the world tonight".

To finish our video we will have Kieran contemplating on jumping into the water to kill himself. Shot reverse shot and close ups of his face and the water will supliment the feelings towards this. We will then have a girl come to rescue him, 'saving' him, and from then it is obvious he will be alright.

Mood Board of Initial Ideas

These were a few of our initial ideas. This varied from a different song such as animals by Martin Garrix to different locations and props. Some of these we have used in our actual music video, for example; the drugs that Kieran is pretending to use and the 'rave' scene that the girl character is going to in aid to make out she is having a normal teenage life.

What we have done so far

Walls in brick lane

Advantages of using Brick Lane as a location

The advantages of using Brick Lane as a location are as seen in these photos. When we visited Brick Lane we hadn't before seen what it was like we had only heard stories about the detailed walls and strange scenery’s around. It came to a surprise to us of how much we could use to film and it gave us many possibilities and ideas which we later will develop here, One being the use of the walls. We are using Kieran to walk by the walls as if times have changed yet he hasn't moved from the same area. This would be a good shot as there are easily weird walls to film on and can be done quickly if affective. We have also made a plan video of it so we already know it can be done. All of these photos were taken in Brick Lane and gives you as a viewer a glimpse of what is expected here.

Walls in Bricklane shot

When we went up to london we began to look at different ways we could get the shot we wanted. This was only a practice shot so it isn't 100% how we want it to look in the final edit however we liked the idea of the changes between the 3 seperate walls as it looked like the character was going somewhere and creates an urban background life style. We made this shot through the use of the video on Instagram as it allows you to pause the video and then carry on shooting wherever is intended. You can also add effects such an colour change to black and white, sepia, and more contrast within seconds so this is a easy yet creative way to film. As this is only a rough copy it allowed us as a group to be able to diccuss what we thought went well and what we won't use for the final idea. By already analying shots its helping us make our final product perfect and how we want it to look at the end. When we re-shoot this shot we have decided that we will use a tripod as it will hold the camera still with no 'hand wobbling' as it does in this, This is because it looks more professional if the camera is still and it will get the same angle as the wall we want to use before not just an estimate, Also we migt use more than 3 walls in the final copy as it will come across more effective as if he's travelling a further distance the editing will need to be made alot quicker will around 2-3 second cuts to each wall.

Location ideas

We went to London to location hunt and found lots of urban art walls. Such as cartoon figures, bubble writing and random abstract. We found these walls in Bricklane and thought they would be the perfect location for one of our chosen shots of a cut between each wall so it looks like the main character is walking through different locations.
We found that bricklane is the best location for the 'wall shot' as it has a variety of these walls everywhere, down basically every street you go down, When we was in Bricklane we realised that it isn't that busy so it would be quite easy to shoot here so there wouldnt be any random by passers or people we didn't want in our shot.
In the last picture Emma is standing by the wall (although you can't really see her) becuase of all the artwork it takes the attension away from Emma and makes her look really small even though we only took the shot from across the road. This might be a difficulty in shooting as you can't see the character too well so to overcome this Emma could be holding the camera herself up close or we would need to dress her in vibrant/wacky clothing so she stands out.

Swedish House Mafia Moodboard

I have made a mood board on Swedish House Mafia to get an idea of who they are and what they are about. This also meant I could research them and find out more about their music and what they have in their music videos for us to base ideas around when making our video.
What I have learned is that they are very up beat and live a party life, dj'ing, having many fans come to their concerts. They use alot of bright lights for affect when the beat drops.

Lip Syncing 2

This video includes a few different songs which were combined into one video, this allowed us to have more practice of lip syncing to get us more prepared for the final video.

Lip Syncing

This video shows kieran lip syncing part of the original song we are hoping to do by swedish house mafia. We thought this would be a good idea as it allowed Kieran do have a taster of what he is going to have to do for the final video. As Kieran is the only boy in our group we decided that he would be the best part for the main singer as its a male vocal. From looking at this short clip of lip syncing we have already realised we will need to do more practice and make sure that Kieran moves more along with the song and doesn't just stand still to make it more believable.

Asking permission from Univeral Music

Here is proof of us asking permission to use 'Save the World' by Swedish House Mafia as our chosen music video. We thought by emailing Univeral Music for their permission was a good idea because of the copy right issues we could face if we were to publish our changed video to an audience. As you can see in the email the only people who would be able to see our video would be the examiner, our class and our teacher so with or with not their constent we would still be able to use it but it would be a good idea to have permission in the first place.

Instagram

This shows the set up on the instagram page we have started, we will be uploading weekly pictures showing our planning, development and whatever is going on with the music video. By setting up an instagram account it allows the audience to feel important and know whats going on, Instragram is one of the most popular social networking sights with Billions of users by our account not being on private this means anyone all over the world can view our work and take an interest.

Evaluating the AS blog short video

This video shows kieran talking about our AS thriller blog, and some of the positives and negatives we felt came up throughout. Because this video wasn't particulary long we have produced some screen shots of the old blog also which we will evaluate in more detail.

This is one of our posts on the blog which consisted of a detailed plan of when we was going to shoot certain parts of our thriller. It includes where, when, and what time we will be shooting. By sticking to this schedule it allowed us to keep organised with what we was doing and not waste time at locations. This was one of the positive posts we decided when looking through because it really helped us out when shooting and everyone in the group knew what was going on. We will be making another one of these this year for our music video.
On our blog we had quite a few videos; this included us in the group 'chatting' about planning, locations, music etc but we also filmed audience feedback from teachers and students. This was a quick and effective way to store the information at the time yet I feel now looking back and watching each video that we would definitely need to plan out what was going to be said before it was filmed to avoid fillers and awkwardness with not knowing what to say as this made the videos look unplanned and unprofessional. Using videos to keep information would still be a good idea for the blog this year on our music video as it is media rich and spontaneous speech however we will need to take the negatives we found from last year into consideration before doing this.

This shows a screen grab from the short trailer that was made for our opening to the thriller, we felt that this was one of our stronger posts on the blog as it really fitted in with the whole blog and acted as a 'teaser' to the official Thriller opening we was planning throughtout. This short trailer was made on an Ipad app called iMovie ans allowed us to use different effects, cut ins and words. We will probably be using this again this year in our prelim or if we again use a teaser of the real video.

Codes and Conventions of a music video

Swedish house mafia video and analysis.

Analysing our chosen song video.

The video features several characters being victims of crime. One is sitting in his car when a man comes up, smashes the window and steals his car, another is working in a restaurant when two robbers with baseball bats run in, smash the tip jar, and another is a woman who gets her handbag stolen in the street. A dog sees the woman being mugged and barks, making lots of other dogs come over. While one dog comes over and comforts the woman by licking her, another dog chases after the robber and pushes him through the glass pane at a bus stop. Two more dogs arrive at the shop, and one pulls on the trousers of one of the robbers, the other jumps up and bites the jacket of the robber and slams his head onto the surface top. More dogs chase the man in the stolen car, which flips and crashes the car after swerving to avoid hitting two puppies sitting in the street. The two puppies confront the man in the car, and the woman who was mugged is being comforted by one of the dogs. The video ends showing quick flashing images of the dogs.

Genre presenations

This presenations shows the song pompeii by bastille, it has the genre of deep house.
This presenations shows the song first of the year by skrillex which is a dubstep genre.

We decided to take a look at a few different genres of music so that it would make showing our song easier and help us get a better view on each genre. We made a powerpoint of these as it allowed us to explore a certain song in depth and got the whole group understanding what we will need to be doing for our final song.
